Best Cheap Apartments for Rent in NYC Right Now

As vacant apartments continue to flood the market, we have made an effort to carefully browse various ad sites, newsletters and Craigslist, to find the best deals. A good deal on a rental apartment, of course, can mean very different things to different people. While we sifted through hundreds of listings, we kept an eye out for places worth their asking price, whether it’s a one-bedroom apartment under $ 2,000 (which is really a bedroom ) or a three-bedroom duplex for $ 5,000, with crown moldings, a massive backyard and an integrated washer / dryer.

This week we noticed several particularly spacious T1s in Manhattan, including a Harlem Brownstone crossing apartment (photo above) with a huge dressing room, a 750 square foot Kips bay condo unit which looks even larger because its massive windows overlook a three acre courtyard garden and a Nomad apartment without elevator with a 16 foot long bedroom and a 200 square foot private terrace. On the small side: this studio rue Cornelia that ticks all the boxes (architectural details): arched casement windows, brick fireplace and built-in shelves.

Astoria

$ 1,475: A spacious pre-war studio with separate glass-fronted kitchen, herringbone floors, arched door, built-in bookcase, plus four closets, four minutes walk from 30th Avenue N / W trains.

Bay ridge

$ 2,350 *: Three bedroom, two bathroom apartment just one block from the Bay Ridge Avenue R train with remodeled kitchen and bathrooms.

Lit-Stuy

$ 1,850: An 850 square foot bedroom in historic brown stone near Utica Avenue A / C trains, with beautiful hardwood floors, two decorative fireplaces and French doors.

$ 2,000 *: A 750 square foot bedroom on a full story of a brown stone on Putnam Avenue just off Tompkins Avenue, with huge windows, two marble fireplaces, a clawfoot tub and an arched recessed shelf in the living room.

$ 2,100 (effective net worth: $ 1,950): A sunny renovated gut-style bedroom in brown stone on Greene Avenue (between Bedford and Nostrand avenues) with high ceilings, huge grid windows, two massive exposed brick walls, a dishwasher and central air conditioning.

$ 2,299 *: Two renovated bedrooms with several exposed brick walls and skylights in the living room and bathroom, on Lexington Avenue (four minutes walk from the Bedford-Nostrand Avenues G train and two blocks from Herbert Von King Park ).

$ 2,800: Two bedrooms on the ground floor with a private entrance and a small fireplace, a spacious kitchen with dining area (with large appliances, dishwasher included and a washer / dryer stacked on one side) and a private patio overlooking a shared courtyard.

$ 2,800: Two bedrooms plus a bonus room right across from Herbert Von King Park, comprising a large open kitchen with bar seating, two decorative fireplaces (one in the living room and one in a bedroom) and, oddly enough, a bathroom with two showers (one of them is in a glass tank).

Boerum hill

$ 2,500 *: A floor-to-ceiling white brick wood-burning fireplace, a bathroom with wood slatted ceilings, and a king-size bedroom with sliding glass doors to a balcony, right next to the F / G trains in Bergen Street.

$ 4,650: Duplex townhouse very close to Atlantic Terminal, with a large living room and open plan kitchen on the lower level and four bedrooms (the two larger ones have fitted wardrobes) on the upper level, connected by an elegant staircase (with thin balusters).

Brooklyn heights

$ 3,500: An 820 square foot brown stone bedroom a three minute walk from the Court Street Station R train, with crown and base moldings throughout, two marble fireplaces, a picture window and an exceptionally floor-to-ceiling bathroom bright and spacious.

Chelsea

$ 4,900 *: Two bedroom loft in an iconic cast iron building on West 18th Street with 21 foot wide skylights throughout the living space, previously listed for $ 5,600.

Chinatown / East Village / Lower East Side

$ 1,670 *: Rent stabilized studio on the corner of East Broadway F train, with checkerboard floors and open shelving in glass-fronted kitchen, pewter ceilings and a surprisingly large private patio.

$ 3,290 *: A renovated 1200 square foot bedroom with two large arched windows, with exposed brick walls painted white, recessed lights throughout, white and charcoal kitchen, bleached oak floors, washer / dryer, washer dishes and central air conditioning.

$ 6,545 (net workforce: $ 6,000) *: Four bedrooms, two full bathrooms, six closets and a 24 foot long living room on Clinton Street just below Rivington Street.

Fort Greene

$ 2,000 *: Large, bright studio one block from Fulton Street C and Lafayette Street G trains (and one block from Fort Greene Park) with exposed beams, large casement window and separate alcove kitchen.

$ 2,050 *: A room half a block from Fort Greene Park with lots of moldings and two exposed brick walls.

$ 2,500: Two bedrooms across from the Brooklyn Navy Yard (a five-minute walk from the ferry), with open shelving and a patterned tile backsplash in the kitchen, plus rare accessories (motion-sensing lighting, a new sink, and apple shower and dimmer for the living room light).

$ 2,950: Rent stabilized apartment near Barclays Center with two large bedrooms (the largest currently accommodates both a desk and a keyboard with room), 1.5 baths, a kitchen with a five-burner stove and pendant lights in wardrobes, and a private patio.

$ 3,500: Really massive apartment (the living room and one of the three bedrooms are particularly large) with a private terrace on Myrtle Avenue.

Greenwich Village / West Village

$ 2,120 (net workforce: $ 1,943): So many lovely details (white brick fireplace, built-in shelving, arched casement windows) in a renovated Cornelia Street studio just around the corner from all the West 4th Street trains.

$ 2,500: A queen bedroom with ten foot ceilings, a kitchen / diner, exposed brick and tile floors in the glassed-in bathroom.

2,600 dollars (effective net amount: 2,167 dollars): Renovated king-size one bedroom on Morton and Bleecker streets with lots of windows, plus a two-person wet bar and custom hanging cabinets in the kitchen.

3,400 dollars (effective net amount: 2,833 dollars): More remodeled one bedroom office on the top floor with two skylights, dishwasher and exposed brickwork and recessed lights throughout.

$ 9,500 *: 1,700 square feet, three fireplaces and a large shaded terrace next to the master bedroom in a 25 foot wide townhouse on 11th Street East.

$ 16,000: A penthouse apartment on the ground floor (2,000 square feet) that may be worth the effort, with a large living room with five arched windows, exposed beams to very high ceilings, a brick fireplace, a fridge full height wine, a tub in the huge master bathroom and a row of skylights in the second bedroom.

Harlem

$ 1,499: Tidy south facing studio on 121st Street W. with remodeled kitchen and double closet, plus access to an 800 square foot communal roof terrace.

$ 2,500: A 1000 square foot brown stone bedroom with an especially large living room and open kitchen (including at least a dozen glossy white cabinets), an intricately carved fireplace, huge walk in closet, washer / dryer and balcony.

Kips Bay

$ 1,890 *: Low price on a renovated room with French doors, exposed brick, washer / dryer, mini wine fridge, dishwasher and recessed lights on Second Avenue.

$ 2,550: Large 1 bedroom condo with tons floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a magnificent three-acre garden that is only accessible to resort residents.

Midtown

$ 2,430 *: Two bedrooms on West 56th Street with very high ceilings, exposed brick in each bedroom and a breakfast bar in the open kitchen.

Nomadic

$ 3,350: A one-bedroom storey of Lexington Avenue (plus a bonus office or dining room facing the entrance) with white painted brick walls, a fireplace, hardwood floors, and a private 200 square foot deck on the 16 foot long room.

Prospect-Lefferts Garden

$ 2,300: Three 1,000-square-foot bedrooms near the Winthrop Street 2/5 trains, with a private entrance, original hardwood floors, large glass-fronted kitchen with a full-size lineup, and an updated bathroom with sleek black accents.

$ 6,000 *: Four beds, three baths spread over 2,280 square feet in a renovated gut-style townhouse with front and back yards, wide-plank oak floors, a picture window with an integrated bench seat in the master bedroom and a freestanding bathtub , just two blocks from Prospect Park and the Parkside Avenue Q train.

Soho

$ 2,200: A large, well-lit bedroom and living room with a sliding door (can potentially be used as a second bedroom), plus a renovated kitchen (it’s small but has a decent amount of cabinetry).

Upper East Side

$ 2,950 (net workforce: $ 2,689): Two bedrooms near Carl Schurz Park, with a spacious living room (fits a desk, dining table for six, sofa, and TV) and a glass-fronted kitchen (which has a countertop dishwasher and new washer / dryer). dryer), as well as large wall moldings throughout.

Upper West Side

$ 2,050 (net workforce: $ 1,879) *: A particularly charming large studio with a fireplace, chandelier, wall moldings, hardwood floors, and updated kitchen on West 90th Street less than a block from Central Park.

$ 2,350 *: One bedroom downstairs living room on West 76th Street, with 12 foot ceilings, built-in shelving (plus a desk), small wet bar and floor to ceiling pantry.

Williamsburg

$ 2,499: Extra-large 1,000 square foot apartment on Withers Street (across from Llama Inn and a three-minute walk from McCarren Park), with two large bedrooms (each with two windows), separate living and dining area, plus a common garden and laundry.

$ 2,799: One bedroom loft on Berry and S. 3rd streets with an unusual amount of built-in storage (open shelving and wardrobes), island and dishwasher in the kitchen, plus access to a tenants garden.
