Modsy acts as a middle ground between designing a room on your own and hiring an interior designer. This service takes into account your design preferences and budget to provide you with a 3D rendering of a newly decorated space that matches your personal sense of style. From there, you can edit the layout and purchase individual furniture to bring it to life in your own home.

The Modsy design process

Step 1: the style questionnaire

The first step to receiving a Modsy render is to take your test style. This helps the team get a feel for your personal design style.

Questionnaire It’s super easy. You look at some photos of rooms and choose the ones you like. From there, Modsy uses its top three options to help you create a mood board. You have a chance to like or dislike specific items, as seen in the photo above.

Step 2: photos and measurements

Next, it’s time to help the folks at Modsy get a feel for their current space. To do this, I took some simple measurements of the width and length of the room, made a drawn floor plan (optional), and uploaded eight photos of my current living room from various angles.

As you can see, the photos don’t need to be high-quality. They just need to be good enough for the Modsy designers to have a complete idea of ​​the space.

Eight photos seemed like a lot to me at first, especially for a room as small as mine. However, since Modsy designs include a 3D representation of the space, all of that information is necessary to get an idea of ​​how the room fits together. Believe me when I say that the effort is worth it for the final product.

Somehow, even with the numbered spots, I missed an angle of the room when I took my photos. However, the Modsy support team was very friendly and contacted me immediately to help fix the issue.

Step 3: your design vision

Finally, Modsy asks you to answer some questions about your room’s vision. You can specify things like your budget, how you plan to use the space, if you want specific brands to be incorporated, or if you want them to work with your existing furniture.

I live with a roommate and we mainly use the living room to relax at the end of the work day or to entertain friends. From my design vision, I told them that I was expecting a relaxing space that is still suitable for entertaining. Although my requests were simple, there were also opportunities to be much more specific about children’s spaces, additional storage, and more.

Since our living room is still a hodgepodge of post-college furniture, I also opted for the Modsy team to redesign the space from scratch. That said, if you have already invested in more unique furniture, it is good to know that they are willing to work with what you already own.

Step 4: receiving your designs

Now for the fun part. After several days, you will receive an email with your complete designs. Each Modsy Package comes with two starter design options.

Here’s what the team came up with for my Scandinavian-inspired living room:

As you can see, Modsy provides renderings from a variety of angles, including from above, to give you a complete idea of ​​how the space fits together. There is also an option to look at the room in 3D, which was great to play with.

That being said, this initial design was not my favorite. The furniture and design felt a bit too traditional, and I didn’t like the accents, especially the cushions. It felt more like something I would put in a formal living room, rather than my main living space.

I knew this was just a first try, but I was still happy to have a second design option.

I love the second design they made for me. It is perfect for my personal style.

I’m a big fan of the combination of light wood and natural textures, plus all the different textures in the wood grain, rugs, and woven cushions. I’m also a fan of adding some vibrant plants and accent chairs. With just a few changes, I would definitely make it part of my overall home design.

Which brings me to the last step in the process: edit. Modsy It is important to give you opportunities to edit your design until it is exactly what you want.

Once you have received your designs, you will have access to a dashboard where you can make changes yourself or request them from Modsy designers. Modsy also offers unlimited redesigns with each pack. You can choose your favorite design to work with or modify them until there is a clear winner.

However, the most interesting part of the service, in my opinion, is that the provision is only part of the deal.

Once you’ve perfected your design, you’ll be able to purchase selected furniture for yourself, all in one place. Also, if you are not a fan of these pieces, you also have the possibility to buy other similar products until you find exactly what you are looking for. You have the option of purchasing similar items in different colors, materials, and prices.

Once you have made all of your selections, Modsy’s personal shopper team will handle the purchase and ship your new parts to you. All you have to do is set everything up when you get home.

Honestly, yes. Even though the service chose pieces that were too expensive for my current budget (I chose the cheapest option, which was $ 2,500 or less for the room), I will be back.
